Class 101 DMU at Llandudno Junction depot

11th May 1993

Metro-Cammell products new & old side-by-side in the carriage shed at Llandudno Junction on May 11th 1993. With a 27 year age difference, The two-car Class 101 with car 51245 nearest the camera, had been built in 1958, and in 1993 formed as part of Longsight set LO604. The 151 was a pair of units (151 001/002) constructed by Met-Cam at Washwood Heath as prototypes for a proposed new generation of DMU's in 1985. In the event, the order went to BREL for the Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet and the 151's remained as 'what-might-have-been'. Metro-Cammell later gained a 'consolation prize' order to build the 114 x 2-car Class 156 fleet between 1987 & 1989. The 151's were eventually renumbered to 151 003/004 and various schemes were put forward to re-use them, but following a period of outdoor storage at Crewe South, they were scrapped in 2004. Martyn Hilbert.
