Class 101 DMU at Leyland

16th May 1986

A Metro-Cammell Class 101 three-car set, with Driving Motor Brake Second M53314 at the rear, was stood at Leyland with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. The unfamiliar sight of a Class 101 was due to the sidelining of almost new Class 142 Pacers, following reliability issues, causing the transfer of still extant and serviceable first generation DMU's to Newton Heath depot, garnered in a hurry from across the BR network. While on Dark Lane bridge at Hatton on 15 September 1998 I was surprised to see a class 101 DMU coming down the bank from Hatton station. It turned out to be 101842 with cars 53321 + 53314 providing the power and traction for test coach Iris, 975010, the AEC engines in which rarely seemed to be in operation. Peter Tandy.
