Whilst alighted passengers make their way down the platform, the crew have a conversation in the cab of Class 104 Driving Motor Composite M50528 whilst it was stood at Bolton leading a six-car Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 23rd 1979. This was very much a routine daily sight along this busy route in the 1970's, with the BRCW Class 104's working most services to and from the Fylde Coast. Martyn Hilbert.

23rd June 1979

The driver looks-back as passengers alight and board Cravens Class 105 Driving Motor Brake Second M50755, as it was stood at Bolton as the lead car of a Kirkby - Wigan Wallgate - Manchester Victoria service on June 23rd 1979. Note the model of the Isle of Man steamer in a glass case, visible on the extreme right of this scene. These models were a feature at the stations of both Bolton and Blackburn at the time - now sadly gone. The Cravens Power-Twin fleet based at Newton Heath Depot were a joy to behold. Run-down, noisy, but with well-sprung seats and a warm interior that smelled of diesel fuel. The degree of rattle from the metal interior fittings was dependent on engine revs and speed - and all topped-off with an interior that had green formica panels - Happy Days. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

23rd June 1979

A pair of Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin DMU's were forming a Manchester Victoria to Kirkby service awaiting departure from Bolton on an overcast June 23rd 1979. Bringing up the rear complete with its paraffin tail-lamp was Driving Motor Brake Second M50771. The Power-Twin fleet were a familiar sight around Greater Manchester and Lancashire at the time, and the Preston to Colne service was virtually monopolised by these distinctive machines. A ride on a Power-Twin was an experience never to be forgotten. Pale green formica interiors, curvy-backed seats, and every imaginable metal item from the luggage racks, window frames and door surrounds would vibrate to various degrees depending on the engine speed. They had comfortable seating and a smell of warm diesel throughout each car. They were though to be quite rough and ready at the time, well-worn, but far superior to what was to follow, that promised so much (Class 142 Pacers). Martyn Hilbert.

Class 105 Bury Bolton Street 14 Feb 1981. The Rossendale Farewell Railtour ran from Manchester Victoria to Rawtenstall and back. Billed as the last train along the branch the only sections covered which aren't still regularly available are the curves at Castleford and the short section from there to Heywood, plus the flat crossing in Bury which has been replaced by the "ski slope" bridge. Here we are at the lunch stop at Bolton Street, the electric lines having already been diverted to nearby Interchange station prior to the line's conversion to trams.
