 DMU

This Met-Cam had just arrived at Durham Station from Sunderland on a quiet summer Saturday afternoon in 1962. It was then of the standard combination of Motor Brake Second and Composite Trailer. Roy Lambeth.

 DMU

3rd October 1975

A Class 101 at Durham on a local service to Newcastle, 3 October 1975. Nigel Menzies.

 DMU

26th October 1976

This badly composed original slide - perhaps rushed due to the photographer realising its rarity - shows the unusual sight of a Class 114 DMU at Durham, apparently heading north towards Newcastle on the early evening of Sunday 26/10/1976. The destination shows Darlington, which is perhaps the nearest available name available on its blind. Graeme Phillips Collection.

 DMU

The RCTS North Eastern No.5 Rail Tour during its stop at Kelloe Bank Foot, County Durham, on 27/9/80. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Unknown Date

Three 2-car Class 101s pass by at Ouston Junction, Birtley, Co, Durham. This was the East Coast Main Line between Durham and Newcastle in pre-electrification days. In the background, the bridge carrying the Washington-Consett line is still in situ. Graeme Phillips Collection.

 DMU

1982

E50263 leads a Newcastle-Darlington train past Wheatleywell Lane, Plawsworth, early 1982. Interestingly the rear DMC has been replaced by a DMBS. The first class accommodation in the leading car appears to have been downgraded as there's no yellow stripe above the windows. Elsewhere on www.railcar.co.uk, it's reported that this set was formed of vehicles E50263 + E59063 + E59084 + E51211 at that time, which is consistent with the vehicle types seen in this view. Simon Hadden.

 DMU

20th June 1983

A Class 101 passes Ouston Junction, Birtley, Co. Durham southbound down the East Coast Main Line in pre-electrification days, on 20/06/1983, with the 18:58 Newcastle-Durham local service. The trackwork to the right is the junction to the Consett steelworks: the original photographer remarked that track rationalisation was evident in this view. Graeme Phillips Collection.

 DMU

30th July 1983

A Class 101 heading northbound at Relly Mill, Co. Durham on 30/07/1983, led by DMBS E51204. Graeme Phillips Collection.

 DMU

13th August 1983

E53209 leads a four-car Class 101 formation heading northbound at Birtley, Co. Durham, 13/08/1983. Graeme Phillips Collection.

 DMU

1984

A Class 100, either the York or Stourton Saloon, and probably stationary for a viaduct inspection, seen on Durham Viaduct sometime in 1984. Robert Forsythe.

 DMU

1985

A 2-car Class 101 DMU, led by car E51223, is seen at Durham in 1985 waiting to return to Newcastle. There used to be several of these services at sporadic intervals through the daytime timetable with more in the evening peak, each also calling at the one intermediate station, Chester-le-Street), at a time when Durham was typically served by just one Inter-City service per hour in each direction through the daytime, plus Trans-Pennine services every two hours. Inter-City Cross-Country services to Birmingham and beyond also called at Durham, but only ran every few hours at this time. Graeme Phillips Collection.
