Three LMR two-car Derby Lightweight DMUs in Harpenden Central station. There were no details with this negative to explain why they were here (or the date), probably an excursion but they lack the white characters stuck in the cab windows normally found on such trains in this period. M51597 leads a Rolls-Royce powered Derby suburban quad at Harpenden with the 6.45pm Bedford Midland Road-St Pancras service on 30 April 1963. Michael Mensing.

1964

A pair of Cravens 2-car units pass at Harpenden East in 1964. Looking at a timetable of the period, these are possibly the 6.25pm Welwyn Garden City to Dunstable and the 6.28pm Luton Bute Street to WGC which crossed at 6.40/6.41pm. The line closed to passengers on 26 April 1965. Kevin Lane Collection.

Set: CD611

In pre-electrification days, passengers alight from the 16.15 from Bedford to St Pancras at Harpenden Central on 9 June 1971, which is formed of two of the 4-car Derby/Rolls-Royce suburban diesel units characteristic of this line (CD611 of Cricklewood depot leading). Note the "red triangle" coupling code symbols on the front Tom Burnham.

15th September 1979

Derby works built Rolls Royce, hydraulic DMU (leading car M51635) enters Harpenden on the 15th September 1979 as it had done for many years, but as can be seen the wind of change is arriving with the first of the overhead masts being in place. 54A South Dock.
