EP514 - Johnstone circa September 1986. Class 120 unit 514 transferred from Derby Etches Park seen here in Johnstone just before the electrification of the Ayr line. The set was formed of 53705 59264 53687 around that time. Building of new housing developments around the station was in full swing. Andrew McConnell.

A Class 120/101/101 formation at Prestwick, circa August / September 1986. The DMBC seems to be missing a digit from its set number, Ayr had many 5xx sets at the time (the formations changed frequently). Note it also still has 'EP' under the left cab window, and it has oval buffers. Although carrying just set number 52, this is set 520 formed of 53711 + 59046 + 53749. Andrew McConnell.

Set 522 is formed of two Swindon 120 power cars (53744 and 53664) and a Metro-Cammell center car (possibly 59558), seen at Kingsknowe with a Glasgow Central to Edinburgh working circa September 1986. Alan Rintoul.

Swindon Cross Country buffet car 59681 at Girvan, September 1986. Most of the surviving 120s at this time ran with Met-Cam centre cars and to see this buffet vehicle was a rarity - possibly the last in service? Andrew McConnell.

51781 was for most of it's life a Scottish vehicle, seen here back in Scotland after several years in Cardiff as can be seen by the set number still carried. Working with Class 120 M59268 + Class 107 51987, this is officially Ayr set 427. Seen in Glasgow Central station on the 7th September 1986, ready to work the 14:05 to Ayr. Hamish Stevenson.

A Class 120 DMU with W51781 at the front is seen in Ayr station on September 22, 1986, beside one of the EMUs which would replace it on the Ayr - Glasgow line. The ex-Cardiff vehicle (sent north to cover for the out-of-traffic Class 107s) was transferred to Haymarket the following week. WS Sellar.

A class 120 dmu departs Troon with an Ayr - Glasgow Central train on 25-09-1986, 3 days before the end of diesel services. The closest vehicle is 53742, it still carries its Derby set number of EP517, 517 was used as it's Ayr set number. Gordon Thomson.

Withdrawn class 27s (004, 017, 012, and 010) await scrapping Ayr Falkland Yard 27-09-1986, as well as numerous DMU cars - class 120 DMBC 53715 is nearest, there are also many 107s. Gordon Thomson.

Glasgow Central circa 10-1986. 318252 is brand new in service on the Ayrline, taking over from the old guard DMU. C616 was one of the Class 120 sets transferred from Cardiff Canton to Ayr to cover ScR DMU shortages in the mid 1980s. Andrew McConnell.
