The BLS 'L&A' railtour during its stop at Waterside on the 26th August 1978. It is formed of refurbished Class 101 DMU set 179 (51459 and presumably 59541 + 51805). Alan Rintoul.
Two class 101 triples, one in all-blue still and the other in "refurbished" livery, head away from the photographer, past Barnhill station on the left, travelling on the link from Springburn up to the old Caledonian main line out of Glasgow at St Rollox. This may be a Glasgow - Stirling working, diverted off the E&G main line by a reversal at Cowlairs. (No Cowlairs Chord in those days.) On this Sunday in early September 1978, engineering work on the main line meant that services out of Queen St were being diverted via Springburn and Cumbernauld. Nowadays the footbridge at the end of Flemington St from which this photo was taken no longer exists, the tracks on which the train is running are electrified and the linesides are a "jungle". Leonard Rogers.

On September 9, 1978, British Rail Eastern Region organised a return trip from Darlington to Eastgate, as far as one could reach on the Bishop Auckland to Wearhead line, and which had lost its passenger service in 1953. The trip was marketed as the "Rail Journey into Yesteryear". Part of this line is now operated as the Weardale Railway. The Metro-Cammell 4-car set was formed 50182 + 59068 + 59113 + 50171, and is seen at Eastgate. Jeremy Chapter.
End of the line : Clayton West. The guard carries the tail lamp to the other end of his Metro-Cammell twin set at Clayton West on 13th September 1978. Murray Liston.

A six-car formation of two Class 101s and a Class 105 is seen on the Alexandra Docks branch during the Humberside Loco Preservation Group "City of Hull" tour on 23 September 1978. The docks authorities had insisted on steps being used to exit the train, even in those days. The Vehicles are unidentified. Jeremy Chapter.
A Class 101 at Whitby in October 1978. Still unrefurbished and in blue livery, this unit has just arrived from Middlesbrough. Plenty of history in this image, with orange BR NER signage, station accessories / equipment plus all the tracks into the station terminus are still intact. With diminishing services, the station was later rationalised to just the single track on the left. However, the platform at which this unit is standing was restored to use in 2014 for NYMR services. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Two refurbished Class 101s in Chester station with a Manchester service. The closest car seems to be M56349 which dates the image to circa late 1978. Note its BR logo is slightly larger than normal - on the white/blue stripe livery there was normally a little blue to and bottom. Adrian Sutterby Collection.

Two three-car Met-Camm (TS401 at the front) sets arrive into Droitwich Spa on October 20 1978. Despite the destination blind, this was recorded as the 1.0pm Birmingham New Street - Kidderminster - Worcester Shrub Hill and Foregate Street. Michael Mensing.
