On 7th July 1985, coming out of the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is a Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482 (M53507, M59195, M53429), officially called Hayfield Tunnel it was the start of the 2.5 mile branch to Hayfield which closed to all traffic on 03/01/70, the tunnel is 197 yards long and was only half bricked up at the other end. Today the tunnel is trackless but the tunnel mouth is still there, at the other end of the tunnel is the start of the Sett Valley trail which is on the old track bed to Hayfield. Andrew J Crowther.

Stratford-upon-Avon had several visitations by Buxton based DMUs in the mid-1980s and on the cold and damp 26 October 1985 there was a 1L04 from Manchester Piccadilly listed in the weekly STN. I spent a few minutes chatting to Mick, the signalman at Stratford East, only crossing to the other side when he pulled off the outer home signal. The train consisted of a six coach class 104 (plain blue) + 108 (blue & grey) combo with vehicles 53507, 59195, 53429 + 51943, 59388 & 52058 and it was pleasing that that the class 104 was leading as these were less often seen in the West Midlands than class 108. Peter Tandy.

A clear view of Stratford-upon-Avon station from the Alcester Road bridge on 26 October 1985. On the left BX482 (53507 + 59195 + 53429) + BX495 (51943 + 59388 + 52058) are stood in the Cold Store Siding while on the right a 6 coach class 116 formation (each set containing Met-Camm centre cars) is about to depart from platform 2 on its journey to Birmingham Moor Street. The 104/108 would later shunt into P2 before making the long journey back to Manchester Piccadilly after the passengers had spent a chilly day in Stratford in the days before all-day opening! On the bright morning of May 1st 1986, A Class 104 Three-Car DMU (Buxton set BX482) with 53507 leading, was stood on the up fast at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria Service. This was a familiar time-honoured scene, the class 104's dominating these services during the 1970's & early 1980's, until ousted by Class 120 Cross-Country units for a short time, prior to the arrival of new Class 150/2 Sprinter Units in 1987/88. Note the unusual application of yellow around the destination blind. Martyn Hilbert.

There's no doubting that the independent snow plough has been out doing a successful job overnight! Buxton DMU depot on 17th February 1986 with BRCW Class 104 set BX484 (M53496 nearest to the camera) adding to the fumes in the shed. DMU depots had a unique atmosphere of their own, although I doubt that those that had to work in these conditions felt the same about it! Remember the sound of Leyland, AEC and Rolls Royce engines turning over, slip, trip and fall hazards, and the inadequate fume extraction systems in depots such as Marylebone, Leith Central, Hull Botanic Gardens, Lincoln, Chester and Corkerhill, to name but a few. Memories! Gordon Edgar.

A White roofed Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu BX484 (M53496, M59137, M53431) has terminated at Disley on 2nd March 1986 because of Sunday engineering works further down the line and is crossing back over to work the return service to Buxton. The line between Disley and Hazel Grove was closed every Sunday around this time for the construction of the Hazel Grove Cord. In it's last years Disley was a "Peak" hour only box, with i think 1 maybe 2 Disley peak hour expresses from Manchester Piccadilly terminating here, they were probably the only passenger trains scheduled not to stop at Stockport. Andrew J Crowther.
