107 DMU

December 1980

Class 107 near Houston Dec 1980. Living in Paisley at the time I took a day out one Saturday to film the Ayr (formerly Hamilton based) Derby's as we called them on the Paisley Canal line and Kilmacolm branch. Why I did this in December and not when the weather was better I'll never know! Leaving everything to the last minute I suppose. Alistair Ness.

Why I did this in December and not when the weather was better I'll never know! This shot is actually on the main line to Ayr and not the branches referred to but was taken on the same day as the others. Alistair Ness.

Living in Paisley at the time I took a day out one Saturday to film the Ayr (formerly Hamilton based) Derby's as we called them on the Paisley Canal line and Kilmacolm branch. Why I did this in December and not when the weather was better I'll never know! This shot is actually on the main line between Gilmour Street and Johnstone and the train comprising two different three car sets may well be a Boat Train from Ardrossan Harbour to Glasgow Central. Alistair Ness.

107 DMU

27th December 1980

For many years it was common for Glasgow Works to despatch overhauled DMU vehicles to Edinburgh in the consist of the daily parcels train from nearby Sighthill parcels depot. On 27th December 1980 there seems to have been a mistake and one of Hamilton depot’s class 107 sets (59782 + 52021 visible) arrived. I can only assume that 40161 was being used to return it to the correct destination, seen leaving Haymarket station. Possibly one of the last workings for 40161 as it was withdrawn 2 days later. Murray Liston.

107 DMU

January 1981

Set: 140

Derby Heavyweight Set 140 pulls away from a rural Houston and Crosslee station on a Kilmacolm working from Glasgow Central. The nearby town of Linwood, developed as post war overspill for Glasgow and Paisley along with the Rootes Car Factory, was poorly situated despite its proximity. The passengers here seem to be heading for nearby Brookfield to the south, accessed by a parallel footpath (to the left of the photograph) and footbridge well beyond the station. The villages of Houston and Crosslee were somewhat remote from the station and were over a mile away to the north. Note the 'running in board' rusting away on the left and the line of cast iron lamp posts - probably gas lights in a previous age! January 1981. alicia hartman.

Set: 150

The driver shields his eyes from the low winter sun as Hamilton based class 107 DMS Sc52032 leads 14:57 to Edinburgh out of Glasgow Central on24th January 1981. A class 303 working a Cathcart Circle service can be seen behind. Note the old Corkerhill allocation number 132 and later set number 150 on the 107 DMS. This seemed to be a spare vehicle that floated between sets and very soon after in would be in set 443 when the 4xx series was introduced. The Central to Edinburgh services could hardly be described as Inter-City with a pedestrian pace round the south. Sc52032 was withdrawn from Ayr depot around March 1984 having been a victim of the depot fire in the January. The by then closed store Paisleys, a once well known Glasgow tailors and outfitters can be seen behind. It closed in 1979 with the building demolished in 1993. A Jurys Inn Hotel now occupies the site. Bruce Galloway.

Ex-works Class 107 set 138 with SC51992 at the front waits to depart from Kilmacolm with the 13.03 service to Glasgow Central waits to leave. Taken on January 24, 1981, the line was closed in early 1983. Bruce Galloway.

107 DMU

31st January 1981

Derby Class 107 DMU arriving at Bridge of Weir with a Kilmacolm service returning to Glasgow Central. The leading DMS here is numbered as Set 142 but the rear DMBS seemed to show Set 139 - see previous picture of probably the same Unit heading to Kilmacolm. Note the abandoned Greenock bound platform in the foreground. The skew bridge over the station is the parallel A761 to Kilmacolm that replacement bus services would follow upon closure of the railway. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.

107 DMU

31st January 1981

Derby DMU and what might be Set 139 or 142 (see later picture) departs Bridge of Weir station for Kilmacolm with a service from Glasgow Central. The line was originally due for closure that day but was reprieved at the eleventh hour. This might explain the distinct ‘lack of interest’ in the departing train! However, the line soldiered on for a few more years and the end ultimately came in January 1983 with a final squeeze on PTE rail subsidies. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.

107 DMU

31st January 1981

Westbound 107 DMU is dwarfed by the Renfrewshire countryside as it skuttles towards the last stop at Kilmacolm. Probably between Fodston and Scart Farms in what some maps show as Strathgryfe. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.
