Contrasting front end designs are shown in this image of two Class 108s in platform 3 at Wigan North Western with a Liverpool Lime Street service, March 1982. Most obviously the unit on the left has a roof mounted headcode box, by then obsolete, whereas the unit on the right has a window to display a destination blind. S Gaskell.

Seeing I had a camera, the driver of the Class 108 DMU waiting in platform 3 at Wigan North Western with the next service to Liverpool Lime Street invited me into the cab of car 52042 where I took this photo. In the foreground is the large wheel for the parking brake, behind is the red emergency brake and the silver lever is used by the driver to control the train's vacuum brakes. March 1982 S Gaskell.

The data panel on a Liverpool bound seen at Wigan North Western DMU shows that it's a Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second. DQ212 is the design code for that type of vehicle and it has 52 2nd class seats. It was last shopped for a C3 exam on 7th August 1981 at works code 5458, which was Doncaster Works Carriage Shops, and would be due for shopping again in February 1984. The LW beneath simply indicates it was a lightweight vehicle. March 1982. S Gaskell.

108 DMU

10th April 1982

A two-car Class 108 DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51422 & Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) M56490, was accelerating away from Bamber Bridge and about to pass over the footcrossing at Asland Close whilst working a Preston to Colne service on April 10th 1982. This location was then wide open, trees now line the trackside along here. The Preston - Colne services were once a solid Cravens duty, by 1982 most of the local Cravens power twins were gone, being totally worn-out. A lot more 108's then appeared and from 1983/84 onwards some two car 104's with their centre cars removed, they being ousted from their long-term Manchester-Blackpool workings by newly-transferred Swindon Class 120's. By 1985/86 there was a real mix of units running, as the Pacer problems started to manifest themselves. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

12th April 1982

A pair of almost ex-works Class 108 DMUs approaching Grange-Over-Sands with a Barrow-In-Furness to Preston service on April 12th 1982. 108's were synonomous with the Cumbrian Coast route, the sets having bars over the door droplights due to restricted clearances on the section between Maryport and Carlisle. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

15th May 1982

The northbound lunchtime service over the joint line, the the 13.55 Cambridge - Doncaster is seen arriving at March on 15th May 1982 formed of a Derby Works 3 car dmu E50626 + E59384 + E50636 allocated to Leeds Neville Hill. The set was refurbished later in 1982. It was not uncommon to see sets from Neville Hill and even South Gosforth on the joint line trains, although most of the time the Derby Heavyweight Class 114s and Cravens Class 105 sets held sway. In the background behind the Shenfield units can be seen withdrawn LMR DMUs including a Class 104 centre car and a Cravens. Gerard Fletcher.

108 DMU

15th May 1982

E50636 + E59384 + E50626 at March on 15th May 1982 with the 13.55 Cambridge - Doncaster. There certainly seem to be plenty of passengers, though whether they are boarding or disembarking is unclear. E50636 had had the two character heacode panel plated over, this was a short term fix and at the next major overhaul it would be rebuilt with a flush front. Gerard Fletcher.

108 DMU

16th May 1982

Some 108s and a 120 at Newton Heath, 16/5/82. Jerry Glover.
