127 DMU

27th February 1986

Vehicle: 55974   Set: 914

I didn't see or photograph many class 127 Diesel Parcel Units but do have this shot of set 914, formed of 55974 + 55984 shortly after it had passed through Manchester Victoria on 27 February 1986. Irritatingly, this one one of a small handful of slides that weren't taken in sun during the whole period I was here, on the platform of the former Exchange Station. A class 120 unit is about to enter the terminus platforms at Victoria and the end of a journey from Blackpool. Peter Tandy.

Vehicle: 55966   Set: 920

Former Bedford-St Pancras Class 127 Driving cars now with roller shutter doors as M55966 + M55967. The unit was stabled at Croft Street Sidings adjacent to the Preston Power Box on March 2nd 1986. One of 11 similar units converted, Set 920 was finished in retro BR Green livery. The nearest car in this view had been turned-out in green for its last period of passenger service when allocated to Cricklewood Depot. The unit was adorned with a plaque commemorating "The First Unit, 1,250,000 miles, Bedford-St Pancras". Following replacement by new Class 317 EMU's, car M51591 was selected for the National Collection at York, but when BR were short of one car to complete the 11 Parcel Units, the NRM handed the car back for conversion. As a consolation the finished unit (920) was finished in BR Green. Martyn Hilbert.
