Two-car Class 101/116 hybrid sets.


11th April 1986


Class 101 DMU at Hatton Bank

On 11 April 1986 a class 101/116 hybrid set T036 formed of 53245 + 53054 was pictured descending Hatton Bank forming the 14.12 Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington service in place of the usual single or double class 122 set. The Down Goods Loop was very rarely used at this time as there was plenty of time between local trains, the only passenger services on the line at the time, for the frequent freight workings. Tyseley set T201 at Trent Junction. The set had quite a few vehicle pairings over a couple of years, this Class 116/101 combo is presumably 53895 + 53219 which dates it to around mid-1988. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Class 116 DMU at Manchester Victoria

Two hybrid DMU formations at Manchester Victoria on 17-10-88, a Class 116/101 2-car (N656 53843 and possibly 54219) and a Class 101/110 3-car (51533 + 59812 + 51463). The unusual location of the BR logo on the 116 is due to the removal of Valleys branding. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.

This picture from 2 June 1990 shows T033, a class 101/116 power twin (presumably 53269 + 53849), one of of Tyseley's sets intended to cope with Sprinter timings, passing Smethwick Rolfe Street station with the 09.30 Birmingham New Street to Hereford service. Judging by the young trees by the lineside I very much if the viewpoint is possible in 2021. Peter Tandy.

Class 101 DMU at Ironbridge Gorge

Hybrid class 101/116 DMU set T041 (53268+53090) is seen waiting time at Ironbridge Gorge with the 17.45 to Birmingham New Street. The temporary station was located at the 161 mile 20 chain mark just south of Coalbrookdale Viaduct on the Madeley Junction to Ironbridge Power Station freight line. It came into use on 30/6/1987 and closed on 3/9/1990. It made one appearance in the BR all line timetable in the summer 1990 edition (table 74). There were two return journeys on Sundays only between 29th July and 2nd September 1990. Prior to that it was an unadvertised service sponsored by the local authority and Ironbridge Gorge Trust. The method of working seeing as the branch was still twin track back then was for passenger trains to run to Ironbridge Power Station Reception Lines first to reverse then gain the up line where the platform was located. Class 116 DMU at Tyseley

A misty day in early 1991 doesn't do a lot for Tyseley's class 116/101 hybrid set T042 (53863 + 51509) as it comes from the Great Western main line into the local platform with a service from either Dorridge or Leamington Spa. The station here bears some resemblance to one a bit further up the line at Small Heath with a massive building over the up and down main lines, very much a feature of the larger GWR edifices. Both these Birmingham stations now serve only local traffic with no main line trains serving them. Peter Tandy.

Class 116/101 hybrid L210 with 53083 leading enters Reading on 27/3/91. 53083 lost it’s original working partner as long ago as 1961 when 50125 was written off by a runaway coal train in the Afan Valley, South Wales. The 101 DTC is presumably 54381. Mac Winfield.

Tyseley class 116/101 hybrid unit T032 formed of 53242 + 53073 was working a Birmingham New Street to Lincoln service when I photographed it at Whitacre Junction on 17 May 1992. Waiting for a path from the loop with a loaded Croft Quarry to Bescot ballast train were 31512 + 31158 along with 2 pieces of OTP which had come from the Bescot direction, crossed over and entered the loop prior to going back from whence they had come when another path was available. Class 116 DMU at Hatton West Junction

A hybrid unit of classes 116 and 101 (the set number seems to be T064) leaving the Stratford-upon-Avon branch at Hatton West Junction on 20 June 1992. The vegetation has grown considerably since that date meaning that it is no longer possible to obtain quite such a wide-angled view. The up main line had recently been relaid and this accounts for the gleaming ballast so evident in the picture. Peter Tandy.

The 10.12 Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington Spa service on 20 June 1992 was made up of class 116 vehicle 53838 leading followed by Class 101 53267 as I pictured it going slowly around the curve from Hatton West Junction into platform 3 of the station. The leading vehicle had recently received a high(ish) intensity headlight to supposedly increase visibility for those working on the track. The up main line had just been relaid and re-ballasted and it looks as if a few yards of the branch had had a bit of spare material dropped around it. Peter Tandy.
