This pair of class 120 Swindon Cross Country diesel vehicles were fitted with headlights for working the Central Wales Line (now known as the Heart of Wales line) between Shrewsbury and Llanelli which operates under a light railway order to reduce infrastructure requirements. The lights are necessary for ungated level crossings which are crossed on a stop and proceed basis. Motor Second 50672 is nearest the camera; the other car is Motor Brake Composite 50722. Both were new in 1958 and withdrawn in 1987. Seen at Shrewsbury on 11 October 1980. Jeremy Chapter.

This class of Derby Suburban diesel units spent most of their working lives operating the routes out of Marylebone. Jeremy Chapter.

Railtour to Cross Princes? The late John Farrow is seen in the cab of a class 115 suburban dmu adjusting the blind display and coming up with "Cross Princes" which must be somewhere between Gerrards Cross and Princes Risborough, more usual destinations for this Marylebone-based unit. This was the Hertfordshire Railtours "Fenbasher" railtour on 4 July 1981, taken at the BR/Kings Lynn Docks boundry on the short Lynn docks branch. Jeremy Chapter.

108 DMU

A truly dreadful photo with camera shake owing to the low speed necessary in the low light shows a pair of 4-car diesel units at Filey Holiday Camp on 18 June 1977, one month before the station closed. The station was at the end of a short branch from the Hull to Scarborough line and this train has come from one and is bound for the other, but I cannot remember which. The rear coach, which would have been leading on arrival, says "Scarborough" on the destination blind so this may be a northbound working. Nearest the camera is a refurbished Derby set (class 108) while a blue BRCW set is on the other end. This latter was a 3-car class 110 "Calder Valley" with a class 104 trailer added. Jeremy Chapter.

These were built in the second half of the '50s, All were built by Cravens of Sheffield, 50384 was new in 1957 and the other pair in 1959. Jeremy Chapter.

From 1979, diesel-mechanical units based at Reading replaced the 3R "Tadpole" diesel-electric units on Reading-Tonbridge duties. After a start with Metro-Cammell (class 101) units, the class 119 Gloucester Cross-Country units were used, because they had a larger and lockable cage in the brake van which was needed for mail traffic. On the evening of 17 June 1984, set L573 (presumably 51083 + 59417 + 51055) is seen arriving at Guildford. Jeremy Chapter.

121 DMU

From 2009 until May 2017, Chiltern Railways used this class 121 "bubble car" on the Aylesbury to Princes Risborough shuttle service. On the late afternoon of 2 May 2017 the unit stands at Aylesbury waiting to return to Princes Risborough and not Lichfield as shown on the destination blind. This is a Pressed Steel vehicle, new in 1961 at Bristol. Jeremy Chapter.
