119 DMU

An unusual combination of a Class 119 DMSL and plain blue Class 105 DTCL or DMCL seen at Swindon on 16 June 1979. With no brake van in the set they are probably ex-works en-route to their home depots. With "Chesterfield" on the destination blind the 119 could be a Chester vehicle - on this date it only had one set, the DMSL being 51100. Nicholas T Smith.

derby-lightweight DMU

A truly remarkable survivor ..... This is RDB 975010 Test Car 'Iris' part of the RTC departmental fleet, based at Derby. It started life in 1956 as one of a pair of single car Derby Lightweight vehicles built for use on the Banbury-Buckingham-Bletchley route. When this route closed, the sister vehicle M79901 was withdrawn at the end of 1966 and scrapped at its home depot of Bletchley. However this vehicle M79900 was transferred to departmental 'Crew Road Learning' duties and moved to York, where it remained until being reallocated to the Research Centre at Derby in 1974. Operating from here it travelled all over the network and was latterly involved in radio communications. Repainted into BR Green livery in 1994 It remained at Derby until mid 1999 before being withdrawn and snapped up for preservation. Here it is seen trundling through Cholsey, on the approach to Didcot, whilst on a transit move back to the RTC ..... 19th March 1993. Nigel Mack.

122 DMU

975042 was originally built as W55019, a Class 122 single car unit built in 1958 and allocated to Reading for use on the many branch lines on the London Division of the Western Region. Departing RG in June 1961 it was reallocated to various other depots on both the Western and Midland Regions before being transferred to departmental stock in November 1969 as a Route Learner in the Preston Division of the LMR. It remained on these duties, operating from various Midland sheds until it was converted to a Sandite vehicle sometime around the turn of the 21st Century. After a period out of use it was purchased for preservation at the Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway .... Here it is seen on Old Oak Common for route learning duties on 11th April 1988. Nigel Mack.

105 DMU

A SF allocated Cravens Class 105 DMU set, led by E53361 runs passed the signal box at Victoria Park with a mid-afternoon North Woolwich - Camden Road service ..... I think that by this time the former junction was a just a short stub and was being used as a run-round for freight services from the GN to the yards at Willesden/Stonebridge Park .... October 1983. Nigel Mack.

The depths of Waverley station, Edinburgh on 11/10/86 as the late sunshine on an October afternoon highlights the front of what is probably 53823 in 116 388 (formed 53823/59354/53876). The unit is waiting to form the 17.24 to Hamilton West via Shotts and Motherwell. Leonard Rogers.

Note the mix of liveries on this Ayr set, which, typically for this time, is a real mish-mash of whatever the depot could cobble together. So, the leading DMBS in blue and grey is recently arrived from Hull, the class 101 trailer is in Strathclyde colours and the class 104 DMBS at the rear, a Newton Heath cast-off, is in plain blue. Leonard Rogers.
