Aylesbury - London

Derby suburban quad (Class 115) sets allocated to Marylebone were used and these worked the services almost exclusively until replacement by Class 165 units in 1991. In the late 1980s years some Class 108 DTCs would be allocated to Marylebone depot and would normally run with a Class 115 DMBS.

Class 115 DMU at Northwood

17th June 1962

A BR Derby 4-car DMU passing Northwood station with the 10.05am Aylesbury to Marylebone train on 17 June 1962. This was the opening day of the Metropolitan Line modernisation between Harrow and Watford South Junction and the new station platforms on the right came into service on this day. Work has already begun on demolishing the old platform canopy on the left. John Cosford.

Class 115 DMU at Marylebone

July 1975

A Class 115 DMU (51889 closest) with an Aylesbury service in Marylebone station, July 1975. Opened by Great Central Railway 1899, it was the last London main line terminus to be built, designed by the GCR's civil engineer Henry Braddock in English Renaissance style. There is another train shed to the left which is not visible in the photo. The train shed on the right was demolished in the late 1980's and replaced by new office development. Two new platforms were constructed in the very wide central platform (which had a cab rank). Hugh Llewelyn.

Class 115 DMU at London Marylebone

31st December 1975

Two dmus & a Ford Transit van at the London terminus of the Great Central Railway's extension, at Marylebone on 31st December 1975. It opened 76 years earlier & was virtually unchanged. The right-hand train is departing for Aylesbury. Before privatisation British Rail removed the right-hand platforms & roof during the 1990 remodelling. However the platform awning on the far right was retained and fitted to the left-hand span. However with the increase in traffic the station proved to be too small & additional platforms were opened by Chiltern Railways. Pete LG99.
