392. MANCHESTER (PART 1) SCHEME

Noted - that joint report regarding the Eastern Operating Area from Officers of L.M. and E.Regions still awaited and Mr.Read will urge forward.

Mr.Gould said he was in contact with the C.M.& E.E. regarding the question of tail traffic.

393. MANCHESTER (PART 2) SCHEME

Mr.Larkin outlined the possibility of using a part of Horwich Locomotive Works for maintenance of diesel units, other than certain light maintenance and examination to be performed by stabling points, and said that these proposals follow the same principle as agreed for the repair of units at Redditch for Manchester (No.1) scheme.  He estimated that at a cost of approximately £16,000 173 motor cars and 85 trailers could be dealt with and for a further £16,000 considerably more vehicles could be dealt with, and that Horwich Works could, as a long term policy, be developed to cover the maintenance of all diesel units in the whole of the Manchester area, West Cumberland area, North Wales etc.

Mr.Butland estimated that to convert Newton Heath Works for the maintenance of diesel units would cost considerably more than would be required for Horwich Works.

It was noted that the question of schedule of examination and maintenance was already under consideration by the B.T.C.

Agreed that the Sub-Committee fully consider the merits of the two proposals.

394. DERBY, NOTTINGHAM, LEICESTER SCHEME

The Committee inspected the various Motive Power and Carriage & Wagon depots in the area as to their suitability as maintenance depots (see minute 385).

An inspection was also made of the stations covered by this scheme, following which Mr.Butland will look into the question of low platforms and Mr.Tonge will deal with the necessary re-signing.

Mr.Larkin said that he is not yet in a position to report on the question of the use of units of the MC + C + MC formation in this scheme but he will do so after consultation with Mr.J.F.Harrison.

The Chairman requested that the possibility of a diesel service covering the Trowell, Stapleford, Long Eaton section be investigated.

The Chairman also requested that the question of a halt between Leicester and Coalville be considered.
