542  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY   (Contd.)

4.  Proposed use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce Engines  (Contd.)

with a view to a decision being arrived at as to the appropriate figure to be used for maintenance costs.

It was agreed that whatever the result of this meeting the St.Pancras scheme should be considered as self-contained and suitable for operation by R.R.238 H.P. engines.

5.  Allocation of units being built at Derby and by contractors

(a) Revised schedule of allocation attached as Schedule 'B'.

(b) Temporary use of Birmingham Part 2 units in Manchester Part 2 and on Liverpool - St.Helens-Wigan scheme - 18 3-car (MC + T + MC) Metro-Cammell units are due for delivery Feb/May, 1958 for Birmingam Part 2 scheme but as this scheme will not be ready for operation at that time, the C.M.& E.E. is looking into the practicability of the units being employed on the Manchester Part 2 scheme and the Liverpool - St.Helens - Wigan scheme if it is found necessary to do so until the 2-car units are available.

Mr. Gould said that there was no operating reason why the units for the Liverpool - St.Helens - Wigan scheme should necessarily couple with units on other schemes but there would be an operating advantage if they could couple to the units for the Liverpool Central - Gateacre - Warrington scheme.

Mr. Stanley stated it had been agreed that when units into the works for heavy repair, re-wiring could be carried out to enable all B.U.T. units to inter-couple.

6.  Dieselisation Costings

(a) Half yearly return of costs of operation.-

Noted it had been agreed that the half yearly statements should continue as at present until the end of 1957 subject to the layout and content conforming to the new B.R. Accounting Classification.  The scope of statements to be submitted after 1957 to be considered later in the light of the recommendation of the ad hoc committee on Diesel Costs and Statistics (Langridge Committee).
