551.  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Contd.)

2.  Programme of diesel train operation over the next five years (Contd.)

This new allocation means that the 180 vehicles for the St.Pancras scheme will not be available before 1960.

3.  Coding of types of multiple unit diesel vehicles

Reference was made to the Working Party report of November 1957 recommending future model type of units and it was noted that some difficulty might arise in the use of the new codes proposed by the Working Party, e.g. Code A.2. includes both motor vehicle and driving trailer vehicle.

Agreed that the matter be referred to the British Transport Commission with a view to the Working Party giving a clearer definition of the codes for the various types of vehicles.

4.  Proposed use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce Engines

The Chairman said that the proposed further meeting with the technical officers of the B.T.C. had not yet been held.  The additional information supplied by the Accountant and the C.M.& E.E. has been sent to the technical officers of the B.T.C., who have made some comments on the figures, and the General Manager has asked for a joint report from Messrs. Harris and Harrison before the further meeting with the B.T.C. officers takes place.

Having regard to the further delay in arriving at a decision on this matter, the Chairman said that the preparation of schemes which had been held up should now proceed in accordance with the requirements of the departmental officers concerned and having regard to the Accountant's assessments.  The submission of such schemes to the General Manager to be treated as a matter of urgency without waiting for a decision of the type of equipment. (See also Minute 553).

5.  Allocation of units being built at Derby and by Contractors

(a) Revised schedule of allocation attached as Schedule 'B'.

(b) Noted that C.M.& E.E. has agreed, as a temporary measure, that 3-car sets may be utilised on the Manchester Part 2 scheme and on the Liverpool - St.Helens - Wigan scheme as a temporary measure.
