574.  SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE ARRANGEMENTS  (Cont'd)

2.  Cost per vehicle for maintenance.  Noted that in connection with their consideration of a proposal for the construction of maintenance facilities for diesel multiple unit trains, the Commission, at their meeting on 27th February, drew attention to the high cost per vehicle and expressed the opinion that the cost of diesel maintennce facilities in general seemed to be getting too high, thereby spoiling the value of diesel multiple unit working as a commercial weapon.  The Area Boards were, therefore, asked to take a sterner view of future proposals of this nature where the expenditure per vehicle appeared too high.

The Chairman again called attention to the need for very careful consideration to be given to the requirements for repair depots and said that submissions for authority should quite clearly show financial justification for new depots or alterations to existing depots.

3.  Spare units.  The Chairman called attention to the need for the number of spare units required for individual schemes to be restricted to 15% or under of the number of working units required.  Messrs.Gould and Baker have the question of the number of spares under consideration and a report will be made to the General Manager.

4.  Outstabling of units alongside platforms. - Noted that comments of C.M.& E.E. have been received and joint report is awaited.

5.  Carriage washing machine. - Noted that inspection has been made of the Dawson washing machine of the Midland Red Company at Wigston, and a washing machine now being erected at the Eastern Region Lincoln depot will be inspected on completion.

6.  Cockshute(Stoke) Diesel maintenance depot. - Noted that this matter has been resolved.
