An accident occured on the 9th December 1983 when the 17.32 Cleethorpes-Sheffield set (53049 and 54049) collided with the 15.02 Drax - Lindsey 900-ton empty oil tanks hauled by 47299 at Wrawby junction, a convergence of lines just outside Barnetby, Lincolnshire. Resulting in one death and a dozen other passengers injured, the cause was put on a set of power points which had been hand cranked but not clipped which reset themselves in front of the freight train. The DMU vehicles were not repaired and withdrawn at the start of 1984.
An even more serious incident took place on the 26th July 1986 when 53016 & 54034, coupled to Class 105 54434 & 51278 collided with a van that had driven onto the crossing against flashing lights. 54434 derailed and ran down the embankment, turning 180 degrees before coming to rest on its side. All vehicles were badly damaged due to destruction of the track, and there was 9 fatalities and 59 people requiring hospital treatment.
Ten vehicles were transferred to parcel use in 1986.
The introduction of 'Pacers' and 'Sprinters' in 1987 saw many of the units placed into store in Lincoln Holmes Yard. Late '87 saw the transfer of the remaining passenger sets to Tyseley, where they widened their sphere of operations, but the fleet was gradually run down.
At the beginning of 1991, when the DPU's were taken out of service, only seven 2-car power trailers were left in passenger traffic.
By the end of 1991 only one set (T027) remained in traffic. In Jan '92 54027 became due for overhaul, and was taken out of use. 53019 worked its final weeks in service coupled to Class 108 DTCL 54484.
