This is Barnsley station in April 1978, and on a rather damp and dismal afternoon a two-car Derby DMU departs on a Sheffield service which will have originated at Leeds. H Wills's coal depot, on the site of the former steam shed, closed soon after this. Andrew Walker.

One of the two vans in Barnsley's parcels siding will be attached to the early evening Sheffield service formed of this Class 111 DMU, which is approaching carefully to collect its load in this image from September 1979. After retrieving the van from the siding, the DMU will need to run round before departure. The parcels sidings were at the north end of Barnsley station, adjacent to the Leeds platform. In this view I am looking from the front of the station towards Exchange Junction, so Eldon Street North would be to my left. The DMU is obscuring the signalbox. Andrew Walker.

Sunday engineering work in January 1983 brought some unusual services through Barnsley, including this Liverpool-bound working with a Trans-Pennine unit (E51956 visible), seen passing more conventional motive power (which looks like a Class 114) in the Sheffield platform. Andrew Walker.
A real rarity at Barnsley in January 1983, due to diversions caused by closures on the Hope Valley route. This Trans-Pennine unit was heading for Liverpool and is seen here entering Barnsley station. The four-car Class 124 / Class 123 appears to have E51956 leading, a two-car Met-Camm is attatched to the rear. Andrew Walker.

A diverted Liverpool service departs Barnsley in January 1983, routed this way due to engineering work on the Hope Valley line. A four-car Class 123/124 unit is at the front of the six-car combination with the Met-Camm on the rear. The set on the left is probably a 114. Andrew Walker.

First DMU to Huddersfield, 1983 The Sheffield to Huddersfield service was re-routed to travel via Barnsley from 9th May 1983 and this is the first DMU to operate the service in the Huddersfield direction arriving at Barnsley station that morning. Someone has one of the doors partially open already, even though the train has half the platform still to travel! Andrew Walker.
Travelling on what is once again a passenger route, a three-car BRCW Class 110 DMU pulls up the bank from Barnsley station towards Summer Lane on a Sheffield to Huddersfield service in July 1983. This was during a brief period when the line was also used by MGR traffic from Dodworth colliery to Wath. Once the pit at Dodworth closed, it became a passenger-only route. Andrew Walker.
