On 14 September 1953 the prototype ACV 'Flying Brick' railbus set sits on the Up goods loop opposite Cambridge station. Car No. 1 is nearest the camera. The set has returned south from a stint at Birmingham. Note there is a coal train waiting behind it; whether signalling allowed for this I don't know but the whole scene shouts "deliberately posed". Note also the oil lamp mounted sideways on. Darren Kitson Collection.
Waggon und Maschinenbau railbus E79960 poses for, or is passing, the camera on 17 April 1958, just south of Cambridge station. It would not enter service until July 1958. The poster in the window shouts "BBC", for Brown, Boveri Cie who supplied the electrical equipment. It was common practice with diesel locos to refer to them by the manufacturer of electrical equipment, such as "British Thomson-Houston Type 1", but almost unknown with railcars. The BBC poster is said by some to have been to disguise the fact these railbuses were German, because of lingering anti German feelings after WWII, yet it also shouts "Mannheim", a German city so this can be discounted. Also, by 1958 German goods were already appearing in Britain, most notably the VW Beetle. Hills Road bridge is in the background would be rebuilt in 1960 in preparation for the King's Cross suburban electrification scheme of that year which was destined to be cancelled for financial reasons. Darren Kitson Collection.

Accident damaged E79614 at Cambridge diesel depot. It had struck a lorry on an occupation crossing between Worlington and Isleham on the Mildenhall branch while working the 7.34am ex Mildenhall on 15 January 1960. The photo is undated but will have been taken soon afterwards. The location of the accident is sometimes given as "Freckenham crossing" which I translate as being Smith's occupation crossing No. 61 just west of Worlington Golf Links Halt. The lorry, which was destroyed, had three occupants of which two died at the scene and the third subsequently. This may suggest the DMU struck the front, i.e. cab, end of the lorry. The Mildenhall branch had a blanket speed limit of 30mph so the DMU would not have been travelling any faster. Darren Kitson Collection.
Two two-car Cravens DMUs depart from Cambridge. Leading is E56444 which was a Cambridge vehicle until September 1964 when it moved to Lincoln. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Wickham DMU E50418 is seen beside D5550 outside Cambridge North box in October 1963. The lack of passengers and tail lamp suggests it is arriving ECS, it will work the 09.56 local to Ipswich. Copyright Chris Burton. Gerard Fletcher.
A fine 'yellow diamond' E79xxx series Metro Cammell twin glides into the bay platforms at Cambridge on September 5th 1964 forming the 17.00 from Ipswich (due 18.43), while over on the left Ipswich based Brush Type 2 D5529 (later the ill fated 31111) stands alongside EE Type 3 D6719 which is just being detached from the stock of the 17.36 from Liverpool Street. A Derby Lightweight DMU is seen in the sidings at Cambridge on 7 November 1967. Closest is DTCL E79261, withdrawn a few weeks earlier after spending all of its short twelve year career allocated to Norwich depot. It seems to be coupled to E79043 rather than its regular partner E79045, all three were withdrawn on the same date - 10 September 1967. Stuart Mackay Collection.
