One of the third (515xx) batch of Swindon Cross-Country sets is seen in Cardiff (General) in April 1962. Michael Mensing.
Not the best quality image but it is apparently the only known photo showing the existence of an all-blue Class 123 vehicle. Seen at Cardiff Central on a Pompay train, as part of a half set added for strengthening around Easter 1968. Stuart Davies.
This is Cardiff Queen Street station still with it's overall roof, housing a Class 116 and others in the distance, circa 1969. Lewis Bevan.
Class 118 set B460 at Cardiff on the 1st June 1973. Steve Davies Collection.
Heading out of Cardiff on the 1st June 1973 is Class 118 set B460. Steve Davies Collection.
According to my scant notes from this day in 1976 (March 12th), I took a TP photo of C320 DMU at Cardiff. Though the details are lacking, It's a captured moment, despite the grainy Kodak plus-X film and my shoddy development of it! Arnie Furniss.
1976 was famous for the amazing Summer but March was a bit grim as seen on the 12th at Cardiff. L711 is arriving (presumably 52091 at the front), in the set was 59823 and completed the set for me! Remember when they kept dmu's together? The loco, by deduction, is probably 47504. It doesn't really matter at this distance in time. It's Cardiff and it's 42 years ago! Arnie Furniss.
C712 is one of many Class 123 sets seen at CF on the 12th February 1977. 52097 is nearest the camera. Jerry Glover.
A Class 120 Swindon-Cross Country DMU arrives into Cardiff Central from West Wales 26/2/77. At the front of set C502 is DMS(L) W50653, the orange curtains fitted throughout second class can be clearly seen. Stephen Burdett.
'C453 at Cardiff'. The date supplied with the image is August 1974, however this is too early to contain a refurbished liveried set. C453 moved to Cardiff in April 1976 and was refurbished in November 1977. Is C453 the blue or the refurbished set in the image? Steve Davies Collection.
Refurbished set C300 at Cardiff Canton. Undated. John Law.
Refurbished lass 116 set C316 in Cardiff Central, date unknown. W50909 is closest, presumably with 59364 + 50856. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Refurbished Class 116 set C303 (50087 closest, presumably with 59037 + 50129) on the rear of a formation at Cardiff Central in the late 1970s. John Law.
Cardiff Central on my day trip of Monday 6th August 1979. On the right is Class 116 BR Derby Suburban set C333, W51148 + W59445 + W51135 which had arrived on the 09.17 Penarth - Cardiff and was about to leave as the 09.45 to Merthyr. On the left, still in all over blue is Class 118 BRCW set B468 W51310 + W59471 + W51325 which had come in on the 08.25 from Gloucester. It was attached to Met Cam Class 101 set B801 (W51446 + W 59547 + W51517) after this shot was taken and then worked the 09.55 to Weston-Super-Mare. Gerard Fletcher.
This is W51517 leading Met Cam set B801 (W59547 & W51446) at Cardiff on 6/8/79. It would be attached to Class 118 BRCW set B468 W51310 + W59471 + W51325 and work the 09.55 to Weston-Super- Mare. Gerard Fletcher.
The 10.48 Barry Island - Treherbert service arrives at Cardiff on 6th August 1979 formed of set C451 (W51338 + W59371 + W51380). Gerard Fletcher.
On 6th August 1979, car no. W50847 was only three weeks out of works, hence its smart appearance. My notes for the day quote it as working the 12.45 Cardiff - Merthyr & 14.00 return, but this latter service appears to be a through train to Barry Island if the destination blind is correct. Cardiff set C313 W50847 + W59040 + W50900. Gerard Fletcher.
The 11.48 Barry Island to Treherbert service calls at Cardiff Central 6/8/79. Class 116 dmu set C332, W51134 + W59444 + W51147. Note the cab end has one cut and one oval buffer. Gerard Fletcher.
A three car Class 116 suburban dmu built in 1957, Cardiff set C300, is formed of W50080, W59030 & W50122. It is departing as the 10.32 Treherbert to Barry Island service on Monday August 6th 1979. Gerard Fletcher.
At least nine of these Class 122 single units saw service as route learners (note the wiper on the centre cab window). TDB975023, the former W55001, was still looking very smart when I photographed it on 6th August 1979 passing through Cardiff at 13.25 on a route learning exercise. Gerard Fletcher.
