Cravens Class 105 Motor Brake Second M50764 leads a 2-Car power-twin into Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk working on March 18th 1979. M50764 has a clean almost ex-works appearance. Waiting at the level crossing is Threlfall Haulage Bedford TK flatbed lorry, Registration number POD 654H dating from 1969. The shot is the wrong side for the light, but the gates were closed as I arrived and forced this view! Martyn Hilbert.

With the token exchange underway, Ormskirk services were passing at Rufford at tea-time on May 13th 1981. Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin formed of cars M50804 & M50765 were working a Preston to Ormskirk service whilst Class 104 M50534 & M56177 was heading in the opposite direction with an Ormskirk to Preston service. These were the days when additional services ran at the morning and evening peak and necessitated the use of the passing loop at Rufford. Martyn Hilbert.

There appears to have been some repair work done to the timber level crossing gates at Rufford on May 13th 1981. With some of the gates in primer, Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin formed of cars M50804 & M50765 on the 17.19 Preston to Ormskirk, was awaiting the arrival of the 17.28 Ormskirk to Preston, due at 17.38, off the single line section. This was in the days when peak-hour services in the morning & evening saw services utilise the passing loop at Rufford. Martyn Hilbert.

A three-car Swindon Cross-Country DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51578 leading (and centre car 59580), was arriving at Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 25th 1985. These were the days when during the evening peak, the passing loop at Rufford enabled two units to pass. There used to be three different DMU's that worked to Ormskirk in that late afternoon/early evening period. The first, in the late afternoon would be a West Yorkshire set (101 or 110) that had worked to Preston from Leeds, whilst the second would be the regular unit that had been running back and forth all day, the third being a Class 120 off a Manchester - Blackpool working, bringing the non- too common sight of a Swindon Cross-Country DMU to the Ormskirk line. Martyn Hilbert.

A Class 104 at Rufford Level Crossing (Ormskirk Line). Having called at Rufford with an Ormskirk to Preston service on May 11th 1988, the Class 104 can be seen in the distance accelerating away to the next stop at Croston, as in time-honoured fashion the traditional timber level crossing gates swing open to let the waiting traffic cross. This scene would be lost forever within six months as the old signalbox and crossing gates would be replaced by a portable cabin and lifting barriers in November 1988. Martyn Hilbert.

With the former goods loading dock ramp in the foreground, a Class 104 2-Car DMU with M53529 leading, departs from Rufford with an Ormskirk to Preston Service on the 11th May 1988. For many years this unit had been a three car set working off Newton Heath Depot on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North Services. By the time this image was recorded the unit had lost its centre car and was having an extended life as the newly introduced class 142s were starting to have reliability issues. Martyn Hilbert.
