123 DMU

In happy days when Selby was on the ECML and Deltics still roamed freely, a Swindon built 'Inter-City' Class 123 Motor Brake Second (MBS) E52087 was bringing-up the rear of a Manchester Piccadilly to Hull service, awaiting departure from Selby on September 12th 1981. The former Western Region car had become part of a Class 123/124 'Transpennine' set allocated to Hull Botanic Gardens. The full four-car formation being E52087 (123), E59767 (124), E59765 (124) & E51964 (124). Martyn Hilbert.

A Class 124 'Transpennine' DMU with Driving Motor Composite (DMC) E51954 leading, was stood at Selby with a Hull to Manchester Piccadilly service on September 12th 1981. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

With the driver clearly pleased to have his photograph taken, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53511 & M53466 was arriving at Rishton with a Colne to Preston service on October 6th 1984. Martyn Hilbert.

Stood at the former Great Eastern Railway terminus at Felixstowe Town, A Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU formed of Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) E56467 & Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) E51265, had arrived with a service from Ipswich on April 28th 1980. Rationalisation had taken place at Felixstowe Town with the track layout reduced to just a single line. The station still had some 1950's British Railways Dark Blue, Eastern Region enamel signs in-situ. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

Complete with bars fitted to the door droplights due to tight clearances inside Holme Tunnel on the Copy Pit route that connects Lancashire with West Yorkshire, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53472 & M53500 was passing Lostock Hall Junction with a Preston to Leeds service on May 7th 1987. 108 DMU

On Bank Holiday Monday August 29th 1988, a six-car rake of Class 108 DMUs had arrived at Southport with an additional service from Manchester. The leading car was Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51424 part of Chester set CH255. The car had been built to Lot.No.30498 at Derby and had been new in March 1960. In 1988, M51424 was partnered with Driving Trailer M54232, the set being transferred to Manchester Longsight Depot in 1990, where it worked it's last period of operation until withdrawn from service in 1992. Both cars were subsequently scrapped by Booth's of Rotherham. Martyn Hilbert.

Surrounded by open agricultural land which is a characteristic of the Preston to Ormskirk route, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53536 & M53520 had left Midge Hall behind in the far-distance, and was passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton en-route to it's first intermediate station call at the village of Croston, whilst working a well-filled tea time Preston to Ormskirk service on May 5th 1989. The set was numbered as Newton Heath N678, the leading car M53536 still carrying Network South East branding on the bodyside, a legacy from when the car was allocated to Bletchley Depot between 1982 & 1987. Strathclyde liveried ScotRail 107444 (presumably 52005 + 59804 + 52031) departs from Kilmarnock with the 10.45 train to Glasgow Central on 5 March 1988. Gordon Thomson.

The 11:40 Cardiff General-Crewe is seen at Newport on 17 October 1970. The Swindon Cross-Country DMU has W50706 closest, it's regular partners were 59296 (still with "Buffet" and a red stripe) and 50648. A Class 116 DMS leads at the far end. Robert Thomas.

Class 101 DMU set B801 is seen at Gloucester Eastgate on 29 November 1975. The service is thought to be the 09:40 from Bristol Temple Meads. The vehicles are presumably 51446 + 59547 + 51517. Robert Thomas.
