Class 100 E51115 at York station on 27 September 1980. We had travelled from Edinburgh overnight to join the RCTS (West Riding Branch) North Eastern No.5 Railtour but this meant hours roaming York station in the wee small hours waiting for the first train of the day to Leeds. Photographing this relatively unusual visitor relieved the monotony a little. Alistair Ness.

A GRC&W twin set at Cromer station on 12 May 1968. That month the Eastern Region had received a batch of these sets moving from Leith Central to Cambridge. The DTCL shows signs of its Scottish background - the yellow first class stripe, the set number and the 'G' on the yellow panel. These were normally applied on top of the blue squares, but photos show that the blue paint used for the squares would often wash off on these sets. George Woods.

In August 1969 I read that the Great Central & Midland Railway branch line from New Mills to Hayfield in Derbyshire was going to be closed shortly so took time off from geological mapping near Hartington on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border & travelled up by train from Buxton. This diesel multiple unit took me from New Mills and here it stands in Hayfield station after arrival. Hayfield station building was intact & quite a few passengers still used the service. So why close it? Allegedly to save maintenance of the tunnel just outside New Mills station. However, after closure the tunnel remained open because it was used to stable the dmu before returning to Manchester. So again why close it? Pete LG99.
