A three car Swindon Cross Country DMU (set EP522 - M53678 + M59293 + M53714) awaits departure from Bedford Midland with the 16:21 service to Kettering on Friday 29th July 1983. By this date the Midland main line had been electrified as far as Bedford and these trains provided an onward connection to Kettering. Brian McDevitt.

On a damp June 29th 1985, a Derby Etches Park (EP522) Swindon 'Cross-Country' Class 120 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53678 leading, was stabled between duties in the now removed bay platform on the East side of Stafford station alongside Railway Street. This was taken during the period of the Crewe Remodelling project when no trains were serving Crewe and many services were starting and terminating at Stafford, with all through services on the WCML using the normally freight only Crewe Independent Lines that bypass Crewe station. 5th September 1981

In bottom gear and down to walking pace, a three-car Swindon Class 120 Cross-Country DMU formed of cars W50679, W59291 & W50727 was grinding its way to the summit of the Lickey Incline at Blackwell with a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service on September 5th 1981. These were stylish DMUs with a good internal layout and seats, and window curtains in the second class saloons. Martyn Hilbert.

Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU's meet at Leyland on April 22nd 1986. On the left M53680 was bringing up the rear of a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service, whilst arriving on the right (complete with its slam-doors opening before it had stopped!) was M51575 with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool South through service. This was the brief period when the large three-car BRCW Class 104 fleet based at Newton Heath had been sidelined, and due to the introduction of the new Class 150/1 Sprinter fleet at Derby Etches Park, the surplus well-worn but not quite life expired Class 120's were moved to pastures new at Newton Heath. The 120's would fade-away as deliveries of new Class 150/2 Sprinters began in earnest during 1987. Martyn Hilbert.
