Downgraded to Parcels & Mail work, a Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53703 was the filling on a Class 142 sandwich, stabled in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on November 30th 1986. The 120 had formerly been part of Derby Etches Park Depot set EP527, but had been converted for parcels/mail duties in the Summer of 1986. M53703 was withdrawn from service at Chester in June 1988 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester in 1989. A Metro-Cammell Two-Car Class 101 DMU formed of cars M53306 & M53325 was heading along the Up Slow and about to take the East Lancashire route at Farington Curve Junction, whilst working a Preston to Colne service on July 11th 1987. 101's were never common at Newton Heath, this particular set was transferred from Chester in 1986 and was transferred back to Chester in late 1987. The set was withdrawn in October 1989 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
The rare appearance of a Class 114 'Derby Heavyweight' Two-Car DMU in the Preston area for a few brief days in the Spring of 1987. Formed of cars E54027 & E53019, the unit was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland Station with an early morning Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on May 4th 1987. The 114's were synonymous with services in Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire and were not common visitors to Preston. This was the period when errant Class 142's saw first generation DMU's having an extended period of operation. First introduced in 1956, the last of the Class 114's were withdrawn from passenger service in 1992. Martyn Hilbert.
With the former Jubilee Mill as a backdrop, a two-car Derby Lightweight Class 108 DMU formed of cars M51924 & M52038 was departing from the village of Croston with the 17.04 Ormskirk to Preston service on August 27th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.
With Midge Hall visible in the far-distance, former West Midlands Class 116 Suburban 2-car DMU formed of cars M53870 & M53923, were passing the Cocker Bar at Ulnes Walton, en-route to their first intermediate station call at Croston whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 6th 1988. The unit was transferred to Newton Heath Depot in October 1987 as cover for ailing and stored Class 142 Pacers. Set N652 was eventually withdrawn from service in November 1988 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
A four-car Class 111/108 combination, was arriving at Skipton with a Morecambe to Leeds service on April 15th 1989. The rear Class 111 set was formed of cars E78969 (ex E51544) & E78719 (ex E51553), that had been reformed from a three-car Class 111 set in 1983. Martyn Hilbert.
