126 DMU

Class 126 construction at Swindon Works (negative 5C/254) on 22 December 1958. Bodyside framework is being welded together in the jig, behind the gentlemen is a completed panel for a bodyside. To the rear of the image a centre car can be seen partly constructed. British Railways.

100 DMU

25326 rescues a Gloucester Class 100 / Cravens Class 105 hybrid (presumably 53355 + 53812) at Burnley Central 12th August 1984. Robert Forsythe.

110 DMU

For something over two years 1984-1986, Crossflatts was my station. A recent and economical new station from WYPTE and Eastern Region. I was working for WY Metropolitan County Council as a young curator against the background of miner's strike and Maggie Thatcher. I commuted a lot by train with my kerching a saverstrip. It was probably the first time in life a train was a near daily necessity. Two interesting classes of DMU regularly frequented the line. The Class 110 Calder Valley high powered sets and the Class 123/124 lash ups which were ending their days on the Morecambe services. Here a class 110 is heading west to Morecambe 24th March 1986. 104 DMU

Croy wood veneer 104457. During four years living in Ayrshire 1986-90, photography of first generation DMUs was a must. Two were right at the top and both were BRCW Class 104 sets. One was the Mexican Bean and the other was 104457 which I called the wood veneer set, took photos to prove it. In this instance on 1st October 1987. This is at Croy. I was travelling Stirling Glasgow and had just been decanted from a failed 101. Closest is 53504, the other two vehicles are presumably 59228 + 53556. Robert Forsythe.

120 DMU

Crossmyloof 30th December 1987. The Ayr Electrics had started as I arrived the year before in Ayrshire. In 1987, the Stranraers, Kilmarnocks and East Kilbride services were still first generation DMU out of Glasgow Central. This was their swansong before the Sprinters arrived. Ayr and Corkerhill depots were working miracles. Even as the 156s started, the plans to reopen Carmyle and Paisley Canal ensured that the final end for Class 101 was some years off. But back to 1987 IIRC the DMU choice was 101/104/105/107/116/120 with three livery choices. This set is all blue/grey but what was meant to be an Ayr 3 car 101 has a class 120 at the back - 53654. The TBSL centre car is presumably 59112. Robert Forsythe.

Sitting in Treorchy station is Class 116 DMU set C303 (presumably 50087 + 59037 + 50129) with a Treherbert-Barry Island service on 15 April 1973. Robert Thomas.

This is thought to be the 10:32 Cheltenham Spa - Bristol Temple Meads, seen at Gloucester Eastgate on 29 November 1975. It is formed of a Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU with DMSL W50694 closest. Robert Thomas.

Class 116 DMBS W50869 is the rear vehicle in this six-car DMU formation seen at Skewen with an up passenger working on 8 April 1982. The far set is a Cross-Country unit, identifiable by the buffet extractor van on the centre car roof. Robert Thomas.
