104 DMU

Taken with a very cheap Dixons own-brand (Prinz) camera on Boots slide film, this picture shows the 15.48 Hull to Scarborough (the class 104 BRCW 4-car unit on the left) and an ex-Scottish Cravens class 105 Driving Trailer (E56471) on the right. Taken on 12 September 1975. Jeremy Chapter.

On 8 October 1983 the Monmouthshire Railway Society's "Coed Bach Connection" railtour, formed of Class 117 Pressed Steel suburban DMU sets (L416 visible), sits alongside 33038 at Llanelli departing with a Swansea to Milford Haven service. Jeremy Chapter.

From 1979, diesel-mechanical units based at Reading replaced the 3R "Tadpole" diesel-electric units on Reading-Tonbridge duties. After a start with Metro-Cammell (class 101) units, the class 119 Gloucester Cross-Country units were used, because they had a larger and lockable cage in the brake van which was needed for mail traffic. On the evening of 17 June 1984, set L573 (presumably 51083 + 59417 + 51055) is seen arriving at Guildford. Jeremy Chapter.

121 DMU

From 2009 until May 2017, Chiltern Railways used this class 121 "bubble car" on the Aylesbury to Princes Risborough shuttle service. On the late afternoon of 2 May 2017 the unit stands at Aylesbury waiting to return to Princes Risborough and not Lichfield as shown on the destination blind. This is a Pressed Steel vehicle, new in 1961 at Bristol. Jeremy Chapter.

124 DMU

An unidentified rake of class 124 Trans-Pennine dmus arrives at Leeds on on 8 September 1975 with the 13.46 Hull to Manchester Victoria. (Bad photo taken with very cheap camera.) Jeremy Chapter.

Motor Brake Composite W50705 was built at Swindon Works and entered service at Cardiff in 1957. It was still allocated to Cardiff when seen at Worcester Shrub Hill bound for Hereford on 28 March 1978. The other two vehicles in set C500 are presumably 59265 and 50647. Jeremy Chapter.

120 DMU

The Monmouthshire Railway Society ran their "Tintern Thunderbolt" railtour on 8 April 1978 using Cardiff-based Swindon cross-country set C507 and a Tyseley class 118 3-car set. Class 120 car W50668 is nearest the camera at the site of Trethomas station, but I have no record of the number of the class 08. Jeremy Chapter.

120 DMU

This is the RCTS "Midland Welshman No 2" railtour at Porth on 13 May 1978. These Swindon-built cross-country units were very comfortable and sought after for railtours where higher capacity was not needed. Car W50715 is nearest the camera, the other vehicles are W59588 + W50665. Jeremy Chapter.

117 DMU

On 21 July 1979 the RCTS and Southern Electric Group "Marchwood Volunteer No. 2" railtour is seen at Bedenham Siding. Set L416 was formed 51395 + 59505 + 51353 all in "blue band" livery. This set, built by Pressed Steel in 1960, ended its life in Scotland in the 1990s. Jeremy Chapter.

E56464 at the head of a mash-up class 105 unit at Kilmacolm on 8 January 1983, the last day of services on the branch. (It has since been reopened as far as Paisley Canal.) The driving motor second (50384) at the far end also had an "E" prefix to its number but carried an "AY" (Ayr) allocation sticker. The centre car of the formation was 51301. These Cravens-built cars were delivered between 1956 and 1959. Note that station signage has been removed. Jeremy Chapter.

122 DMU

A derelict W55018 on Plymouth Laira depot in August 1976. Withdrawn not long before in period ending 24th July, it seems to have been out of use for some time, probably since the two Class 121s arrived at the depot in late 1974/early 1975. Chris McKee.

121 DMU

Class 121 W55025 (P125) sits alongside Class 122 W55018 (P118) in Plymouth Laira depot in August 1976. A steam tender is on the left. Chris McKee.

126 DMU

Class 126 DMU Sc51021 seen at Stranraer Harbour. A classic Scottish DMU type - my train arrived at Stranraer Harbour station where we were to board the Sealink ferry 'Ailsa Princess' for a crossing to Larne in Northern Ireland. Taken circa 1975 with my basic Kodak Instamatic using 126 cartridge film. Chris McKee.

108 DMU

A (blue square) Derby Lightweight DMU at Grange-over-Sands on 19 August 1967. The vehicles - M56267 and M50984 - were allocated to Accrington at the time. My late father, Stanley Smith, rarely took pictures with trains in them, this was a rare exception. It is from a 1 5/8 x 2 1/4 slide taken on a pre-war Zeiss Bellows camera. That's me with my back to the photographer on the wall. Nicholas T Smith Collection.

101 DMU

Three-car Met-Camm DMU set C812 (presumably 51463 + 59561 + 51533) seen at Minety Crossing at Stroud and despite the blind this was a service from Swindon on 2 March 1985. Nicholas T Smith.

117 DMU

A Class 117 DMU seen at St Mary's Crossing at Stroud on 2 February 1985. It is accessible via a small - probably private - dead end short lane to St Mary's Mill via a bridge over the Thames and Severn Canal. St Mary's crossing box is listed, though the lever frame has gone. Nicholas T Smith.

A Class 116 DMU with a blue centre car in Leamington Spa station on 26 January 1985. It is thought to be set TS619 formed of 53854 + 59598 + 53907. Nicholas T Smith.
