56386 is on the back of this set departing Benton on 22/1/78. Iain Munro adds "the unit is heading towards the coast. The feather on the signal is for the curve to join the East Coast Main line towards Newcastle, and the point work diverging to the left in the distance is the chord to the East Coast Main Line towards Morpeth." On the icy morning of 03/02/1978, a Class 101 departs from Seaham with the 0906 Newcastle-Middlesbrough. It appears the train had conveyed mail sacks, which are being handled onto the waiting mail van by three postal workers. Station posters are displayed on the signal box wall, which seems an odd place for the PayTrain guide (rather than the platforms). Graeme Phillips Collection.

On 04/03/1978, the 1051 Carlisle-Newcastle - seen here departing Prudhoe, was operated by this 5-car DMU formation. At the rear is a 2-car Class 101 with a decidedly Scottish looking trailer vehicle nearest the camera with no destination blind and its window frames painted in blue. Leading is a 3-car unit which appears to be Class 101 driving vehicles sandwiching a Class 104 centre trailer. Graeme Phillips Collection.

On the 5th March 1978 Refurbished Class 101 DMCL SC51516 is inside Eastfield TMD, Glasgow, having it's underfloor equipment cleaned by a fitter with a steam lance to remove the oil and grease that build up with constant use. She would last for another 20 years in service before withdrawl in September 1989 and scrapping at Snailwell, Suffolk during September 1990. Bob Woolnough.

Looking like an overhaul and repaint in BR Blue had been recently completed, Dundee allocated Class 101 DMBS SC51251 is stabled at the Glasgow end of Eastfield MPD on the 5th March 1978. Only ever allocated to Scottish depots whilst in BR service she would be dragged all the way down to Snailwell, in Cambridgshire, where she was scrapped in late 1987. Bob Woolnough.
