A two-car Met-Camm DMU set in NSE livery (L222, presumably 51438 + 54382) is seen working the 08:27 (SO) Kings Lynn-Cambridge on 19 October 1991. Robert Thomas.

101 DMU

Metro-Cammell products new & old side-by-side in the carriage shed at Llandudno Junction on May 11th 1993. With a 27 year age difference, The two-car Class 101 with car 51245 nearest the camera, had been built in 1958, and in 1993 formed as part of Longsight set LO604. The 151 was a pair of units (151 001/002) constructed by Met-Cam at Washwood Heath as prototypes for a proposed new generation of DMU's in 1985. In the event, the order went to BREL for the Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet and the 151's remained as 'what-might-have-been'. Metro-Cammell later gained a 'consolation prize' order to build the 114 x 2-car Class 156 fleet between 1987 & 1989. The 151's were eventually renumbered to 151 003/004 and various schemes were put forward to re-use them, but following a period of outdoor storage at Crewe South, they were scrapped in 2004. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

Withdrawn Class 08 08747 was stood with Class 101 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51188 in the yard at Doncaster Works on July 12th 1992. The Class 101 DMBS went on to become part of Strathclyde liveried set 101694 that would eventually be transferred to Longsight Depot in Manchester, and was withdrawn in 2001. 51188 has survived into preservation at the North Norfolk Railway. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

A pair of Longsight allocated Class 101's 101681 (51228 & 51506) & 101690 (51435 & 53177), had just left the WCML at nearby Farington Junction and were running along the 'Back Line' at Ward Street Lostock Hall, heading for the East Lancashire route at Lostock Hall Junction with the Sunday Only 08.35 Manchester Piccadilly to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on September 19th 1993. I think the Dalesrail only ran along here for this one season. They subsequently went on to Preston and reversed. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

A well-worn looking Class 101 two-car DMU formed of cars M53231 & M54388 was stood at Bamber Bridge with the 16.27 Preston to Colne service on June 20th 1992. The set was allocated to Manchester Longsight Depot (101240) and this was the period when the remaining survivors of the first generation DMU fleet were kept in service due to the ongoing woes with the Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.

117 DMU

A Tyseley allocated Pressed Steel built Class 117 3-car Suburban DMU formed of cars 51413, 59509 and 51371, was passing under Watkin Lane bridge as it arrived at Lostock Hall with a Preston to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on July 2nd 1988. Complete with its Tyseley TS308 board in the offside cab window, the set was on temporary loan to Newton Heath during the period when the class 142 Pacer fleet was in a state of flux due to ongoing reliability issues, and before new class 150/2 Sprinters had arrived in sufficent quantities. This particular set was the last Class 117 to remain in operation on the national network, and following withdrawal in 1996, the driving cars were eventually converted as water jetting vehicles for use with Chiltern Railways and returned to BR green livery. They were finally withdrawn in 2015, and both cars have survived into preservation. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

Derby built Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second M53934 was the filling in a BRCW Class 104 sandwich in platform 1 at Preston station on February 6th 1988. M53934 was coupled to Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53501 awaiting departure to Blackpool South, whilst to the rear Class 104 DMSL M53507 was the leading car with a service to Blackpool North. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

With the former Jubilee cotton mill as a backdrop, A pair of Eastern Region two-car DMU's, a Metro-Cammell Class 101 and a BRCW Class 110 were approaching the village of Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on October 2nd 1985. The leading Class 101 set with it's West Yorkshire PTE 'Metro Train' branding has DTSL E54218 at the front. The pair of units had previously worked to Preston from Leeds and during their layover at Preston before returning back over the Pennines, they were utilised on an out-and-back teatime Ormskirk service. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

With a black cab window surround, a Class 101 two-car DMU formed of cars M53323 & M53307 was leading a well-filled Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service, stood on the Up Slow at Leyland station on March 25th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

Cravens Class 105 (Norwich set 59) formed of cars E51258 & E56114 was stood at Lowestoft on April 27th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, a two-car Class 101 DMU was approaching Settle Junction with a Leeds to Morecambe service on May 13th 1978. The blanked over top marker lamp means the DMBS should be from the small 50198-209 batch, and although the number cannot be fully read it appears to end in a 2, so this is presumably 50202, which was a Neville Hill vehicle at the time. Martyn Hilbert.

derby-lightweight DMU

The two "double-ender" Derby Lightweights (M79900 and M79901) arrive into Brackley station with the 6.30pm Buckingham - Banbury service on 6 August 1960. Michael Mensing.

100 DMU

Tyseley Class 116 DMU set TS529 has a Class 100 DMBS (which is possibly M50340) in place of the regular DMBS when seen at Small Heath on 11 June 1976. This was an up local service from Birmingham Moor Street, either the 6.33pm to Leamington or 6.40pm to Stratford-upon-Avon. Michael Mensing.

120 DMU

A Swindon Cross-Country DMU (the DMSL seems to be W50647) at the site of Llanvihangel station (Monmouthshire, on the Welsh Marches Line between Hereford and Abergavenny) on 7 June 1965. Michael Mensing.

101 DMU

101 DMU

Two Met-Camm power-trailer DMUs form the 7.59am Leamington Spa (Ave) - Birmingham New Street service seen approaching Marston Green on 9 August 1963. Michael noted on the print that this was the only scheduled passenger service to use the Kenilworth - Berkswell cut off line. The DTCL closest appears to be M56339, which was allocated to Monument Lane. Michael Mensing.

An interesting formation working the 2.55pm to Dudley in Birmingham Snow Hill on 1 April 1961 - two Derby suburban power cars (later Class 116s) with a GRC&W "double ender" (later a Class 122) as a centre car. The DMS closest is possibly W50099. Michael Mensing.
