101 DMU

30th December 1982

Huddersfield Kirklees West Yorkshire 30th December 1982. After a trip up the Clayton West branch I returned to Huddersfield and caught a late afternoon trans-Pennine train to Leeds headed by a Peak. Looking back as we departed I took this shot of Huddersfield’s impressive 1880s trainshed. A first generation (Class 101?) diesel multiple unit is in platform 3 probably on a stopping service to Leeds and a Class 08 shunter stands in the now lifted up yard. This yard is a car park today, unsurprisingly. Pete LG99.

Huddersfield Kirklees West Yorkshire 30th December 1982. Taken from the rear of a Met-Camm DMU returning from the West Clayton branch on the ex-LYR Penistone line this is the view of Longroyd Viaduct over the Colne valley. We will very soon negotiate Springwood Junction where the ex-LNWR Standedge route merges before entering the tunnels into Huddersfield station. Pete LG99.

The view from a Met-Camm DMU approaching Skelmanthorpe, the only intermediate station on the 1879 Clayton West branch, on 30 December 1982. We came off the Huddersfield to Penistone line at Shepley Junction. The driver has put the single line tablet for the Shepley Junction to Clayton West section in its ringed leather pouch on top of the hand brake in the cab. The branch closed a few weeks later and today Skelmanthorpe is a stop on the narrow gauge Kirklees Light Railway that runs from the junction to Clayton. Pete LG99.

On a grey mid-winter day, 30th December 1982, Honley station on the Huddersfield to Penistone line, plays host to two first generation diesel multiple units. Ours is Huddersfield-bound from Clayton West station on the branch from Shepley Junction while the Up line train is heading for Sheffield via Barnsley. Opened in 1850 by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway this was once a main line route but by 1982 it had been downgraded. Sadly it had a lot further down to go because today it is just single track so no more passing trains. The Clayton West branch closed completely 3 weeks after this visit. Pete LG99.

A Met-Camm at Clayton West, West Yorkshire, on 30th December 1982. The platform awnings had gone but the Victorian LYR Clayton West station building survived until the end. Here my dmu from Huddersfield had just arrived. I wasn't the only one taking photos and there was quite a contingent of enthusiasts, like myself, wanting to record the branch before final closure by BR 3 weeks later. Pete LG99.

A Huddersfield to Sheffield Met-Camm DMU trundles downhill from Summer Lane towards Barnsley shortly after the service was re-routed this way in the summer of 1983. According to my railway diary of the time, the section of single track between here and Summer Lane station was relaid with concrete sleeper continuously welded rail in May 1977. Andrew Walker.

101 335 (a 101/101/107 hybrid) pauses at Paisley Canal for one of the last scheduled services to Kilmacolm before the line closed on 8th Jan 1983. The land around the signal box in this photo was sold in undue haste for housing development and although the line reopened as a single track spur to Paisley Canal it is highly unlikely that it will ever reopen as the important through line it once was.
