Two Class 101s arrive into Tenby on 7 May 1983. Closest is is C803 - 51522 and presumably 51450. Note the group of photographers on the right - likely participants of the Lea Valley Railway Club "The Pembroke Coast Express" railtour. Stuart Mackay Collection.
First DMU to Huddersfield, 1983 The Sheffield to Huddersfield service was re-routed to travel via Barnsley from 9th May 1983 and this is the first DMU to operate the service in the Huddersfield direction arriving at Barnsley station that morning. Someone has one of the doors partially open already, even though the train has half the platform still to travel! Andrew Walker.
Over the years a number of BR promoted Day Excursions ran over the West Highland Line using DMUs, usually Metro Cammell sets as seen here as 1Z44 north of Garelochhead on 14-5-83. This was a Motherwell - Crianlarich special, with trailer brake second set 101311 at the front. Spannerman37025.
DMBS M51190 leads a Class 101 formation at Rhyl on 15/05/1983 with a Manchester Victoria-Llandudno service. The second vehicle has a narrower grey band around the windows, which considerably alters the appearance, making it look more like a Class 108 at a glance. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Two two-car Class 101s arrive into Sheffield on 16 May 1983, complete with headboard, working the first passenger train following re-introduction of services from Huddersfield via Penistone and Barnsley. Paul Braybrook.
I’m not sure how often West Midlands DMUs made it to Devon but it seems a long way to me and certainly would not have been my preferred choice of transport for such a journey. However, this six car set comprising a Class 116 Derby Triple and Class 101 Metro Cammell Triple (TS403, 53336 and presumably 59114 + 53303) arrived at Exeter St Davids from the north on Monday 16th May 1983. In spite of the “Bristol Temple Meads” destination(!) this very busy train terminated at Exeter and was shunted into the sidings on the up side of the station. My attempts to identify the train from the timetable proved fruitless and it still remains something of a mystery. Brian McDevitt.
45 055 is seen at the head of a 101 set at Manchester Victoria, 18/5/83. Jerry Glover.
By 1982, north-east local services were solidly in the hands of Class 101s allocated to either Heaton (Newcastle) or Darlington depots, the Class 104s and 105s having departed by 1981. The next DMUs to arrive were the new Class 143 Pacers from 1985. This pair of Class 101s seen passing at Battersby on Friday 20/05/1983 will most likely have been allocated to Darlington depot, which closed in 1984. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 101 units seen in Whitbys station on 20/05/1983. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Ex-works Metro Cammell Class 101 DMU set 101 303 on Eastfield Depot, 26-5-83. DMSL Sc53184 is closest. Spannerman37025.
Class 101 DMU 53323 in Birmingham Moor Street station with homemade cab livery, 27-5-83. Presumably with 59129 + 53307. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
Class 101 DMU set TS418 (53310 + 59128 + 53326) at Leamington Spa with a Birmingham Moor Street service on 27-5-83. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
Scottish Region Met-Camm trailer brake second sets were not unusual, but four-car sets were. Sc53242 leads 101364 south through Lancaster on May 31, 1983. The TBSL and rear DMSL are presumably normal long-time partners 59080 and 53268, the set had been transferred from Haymarket to Ayr earlier that month. The additional TSL seems to be 59302. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Tyseley three-car Class 101 DMU in Shrewsbury station. Closest is M53323 so this should be set TS417 with 59129 and 53307. The slide process date was June 1983. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Sporting black cab window surrounds, Tyseley allocated Class 101 DMU, set TS402 (53333 and presumably 59116 + 50315), pauses at Cheltenham Spa station with another of its class. June 1983. Paul James.

While maintenance work progresses with the overall station roof, Class 101 DMU cars E53221 + E54392 enter Darlington station, 02/06/1983. Graeme Phillips Collection.
On 02/06/1983, Class 101 cars E56054 E51219 E51247 E54406 stand in sidings within Darlington station. The vehicle nearest the camera still carries its original 56xxx number, but would be renumbered to 54xxx during 1983 as has already happened with the far vehicle and with most others in the series that year. It is also highly unlikely that the front saloon was still being used as first class accommodation by this date. Graeme Phillips Collection.
02/06/1983 at 10:54am, and Class 101 cars E54399 E51206 are seen at Darlington with a service to Bishop Auckland. Graeme Phillips Collection.
