Berthed overnight in the 'Harrogate line' bay, platform 13 at York, on 26th July 1980 was this four car Metropolitan-Cammell class 101 DMU set, Nos.50161-59306-59075-50638, adding splendidly to the fumes under the magnificent overall roof. Thankfully the doors were not locked on this unit and one of the trailer cars provided a useful refuge during the quieter moments of my 'all-nighter' at York. Gordon Edgar.
2G68, the 14.20 Dundee to Edinburgh, waits to leave Ladybank on 28th July 1980 formed of a Metro Cammell class 101 unit with SC51235 at the front. Set number 202 (in a newer style) has been scratched out and an older style 236 added, probably due to it's transfer from HA to DE that May. Bruce Galloway.

The centre car is a TBS, and appears to be in blue & grey livery. The far DMC has a full-length rainstrip - suggesting it has been refurbished - the closest two have just the rainstrips above the door. Bruce Galloway.

For many years BR ran a weekday service to the private platform in Rosyth Naval Base. One train a day ran from Kirkcaldy to Inverkeithing in the morning where it disappeared from the public timetable and took dockyard workers down the otherwise freight only branch. One day in August 1980 I took this grab shot of the evening return working heading up the branch towards Inverkeithing where it would continue as a public working to Kirkcaldy. Other than railtours, it was possible to travel the branch once a year on the annual dockyard open day when BR ran 6 car specials from Edinburgh. Tracks are still in situ along this branch although heavily overgrown and disconnected from the main line. Murray Liston.

Class 101 DMU set B802 (51521 and presumably 59550 + 51449) arrives at Swindon. Date unknown, it seems freshly painted (into blue/grey) post refurbished livery but before a headlamp was added so circa 1980/1. Paul Redmond.
A mixed livery Class 101 set arrives into Dunfermline Lower station with an Edinburgh bound service on August 2, 1980. The GG Trans-Clyde markings suggest the vehicle closest is probably 51537, a recent transfer from Ayr to Haymarket. Walter Burt.

These sets had been refurbished and were normally found on the Cambridge - Royston or Bishop's Stortford shuttles with only occasional forays elsewhere. Gerard Fletcher.
Middlesbrough at 8:58am on Saturday 02/08/1980, with vehicle E50256 nearest the camera, with a service for Darlington. Its headcode box, by this time defunct, appears unusual, possibly a little smaller than normal, the inner square so black it looks like it may have been painted, without the usual central dividing line. This vehicle is now preserved. Graeme Phillips Collection.
