On 23rd August 1980 the BLS “Lothian & Fife Wanderer” covered a number of freight lines around Edinburgh and Fife, formed of 3 car Met Camm set 50243 + 59067 + 51224. I did not travel on this but chose to take some photos on the Granton branch, sadly only with a Kodak Instamatic. Heading south again, the tour passes through Trinity tunnel, and approaches Trinity Junction. The original line behind the photographer leads to Scotland St, used by trains from Edinburgh to Granton where they would have boarded the world’s first train ferry to Burntisland. The train will however follow the diversionary route via Powderhall opened in 1868 to allow Scotland St tunnel to be closed. This location is almost unrecognisable these days, being the “five ways” junction of cyclepaths which radiate along each of the former lines here. Murray Liston.

The tour stopped short of the West Granton Road bridge, at the point where locos ran round their tank trains. The gas works off to the right used to have a fascinating selection of standard and narrow gauge steam locos working an extensive internal system. Murray Liston.

After passing over West Harbour Road, the railtour heads uphill towards the oil terminal, over one of the few pieces of track joining the former North British and Caledonian systems in the city. On the left is the former Caledonian Railway goods depot, still in use today by William Waugh as a scrap recycler and which used to generate trainloads of scrap metal until the early 1970s. Murray Liston.

This view from Ferry Road shows the tour beginning the descent to Granton, passing under the “bridge to nowhere” at the end of Bangholm View. Murray Liston.

Here it is seen passing through Leith Walk station which last saw passenger services in 1947. After closure of the Granton branch a few years later this section continued in use to serve the Powderhall refuse terminal until a few years ago. Murray Liston.

A three-car class 101 Metro-Cammell diesel set (closest is thought to be 50264) was used by the Branch Line Society on 24 August 1980 for their Forfar Railtour from Perth. First port of call was the Dewar's branch where the train reached a point just short of the first trap point. Jeremy Chapter.

On 24 August 1980, The Branch Line Society "Forfar Railtour" ran from Perth to Forfar. I think the numbers of the Metro-Cammell class 101 used were 51241 + 59549 + 50264 as these were the only numbers I recorded at Perth. Having arrived early, I think the unit then did a photo-run out of the station and back in. Jeremy Chapter.
