Following a very dull Autumn day, a gash in the cloud cover as the sun was setting provided some dramatic lighting as Class 101 two-car set 101682 (53256 & 51505) was stood at Romiley with the 16.24 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service on October 14th 2000. Although in BR Regional Railways livery, the well-worn looking 42 year old DMU was actually part of the First North Western Class 101 fleet, then based at Manchester Longsight Depot and seeing out their last days on services from Piccadilly to Marple, Rose Hill & Sheffield. The 101's staggered on until the final five sets were withdrawn from service on Christmas Eve 2003. Martyn Hilbert.

In Regional Railways livery, a well-filled First North Western Metro-Cammell Class 101, 101682 formed of cars 53256 & 51505, was stood at Romiley with a Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service on May 12th 2001. The remaining fleet of Longsight allocated 101's saw out their last stint of operation working services from Piccadilly to Marple, Rose Hill, New Mills Central and Sheffield, before the last units were withdrawn on Christmas Eve 2003. The Industrial Railway Society "Rowntree Requiem" Railtour at Rowntree's Halt, York, on April 11, 1987. One of the shortest travelled railtours ever to run on the national network in the UK, the IRS organised the tour to coincide with their AGM held in York the same afternoon. The tour started from York at 12.35 and ran to the Rowntree Staff Halt on the Foss Island freight branch arriving at 12.45. It then returned to York at 13.10 with a 13.20 arrival giving a total of 45mins in service and a route mileage of just 2m 48ch (2½ miles) for the round trip. Six Bells Junction notes the vehicle as 53258 + 54053. Adrian Nicholls.

Class 101 DMBS on Laira depot, 8 July 1989. The vehicle was never allocated to the Western region, it had been withdrawn from Heaton in September 1988 and would be cut at Vic Berry's circa late 1989. Keith Miller.
