101 DMU

11th April 1987

The Industrial Railway Society "Rowntree Requiem" Railtour at Rowntree's Halt, York, on April 11, 1987. One of the shortest travelled railtours ever to run on the national network in the UK, the IRS organised the tour to coincide with their AGM held in York the same afternoon. The tour started from York at 12.35 and ran to the Rowntree Staff Halt on the Foss Island freight branch arriving at 12.45. It then returned to York at 13.10 with a 13.20 arrival giving a total of 45mins in service and a route mileage of just 2m 48ch (2½ miles) for the round trip. Six Bells Junction notes the vehicle as 53258 + 54053. Adrian Nicholls.

On 29-12-1980 E50259 + E56381 are seen with the 1115 Saltburn - Darlington service at South Bank. South Bank station was demolished and a new station built slightly nearer to Middlesbrough, the much simplified trackwork now gives no hint of this stations existence. John Carter.

June 1975

A 2-car Class 101 DMU, with DMC(L) E50261 (of Darlington depot) nearest the camera, is seen at Whitby in June 1975. Such power-twin formations were less common in the 1970s, so this pair has probably had its centre car(s) removed for maintenance. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

1984

Cars E53262 E59075 E53150 wait at Whitby to return to Darlington via Middlesbrough, sometime in 1984. With their day out at the seaside drawing to a close, the steady stream of boarding passengers slam the heavy doors behind them and locate a comfortable but springy seat. There is a distinctive smell, and windows and other fittings vibrate as the engines idle. As departure time comes, the guard buzzes to the driver to move off, and the train slowly pulls away through the gears, to set off on a scenic journey of 35 miles to Middlesbrough, which, with 15 intermediate stops including reversal at Battersby, will take almost 90 minutes. Graeme Phillips Collection.

50263

101 DMU

1982

E50263 leads a Newcastle-Darlington train past Wheatleywell Lane, Plawsworth, early 1982. Interestingly the rear DMC has been replaced by a DMBS. The first class accommodation in the leading car appears to have been downgraded as there's no yellow stripe above the windows. Elsewhere on www.railcar.co.uk, it's reported that this set was formed of vehicles E50263 + E59063 + E59084 + E51211 at that time, which is consistent with the vehicle types seen in this view. Simon Hadden.
