Drivers were issued with instructions informing them how the prepare, drive, dispose and fault find the various types of diesel multiple units in the correct manner.
Fault finding was an important part of the drivers training and required knowledge, so they could keep a unit operating when things go wrong, particularly when out in traffic when there were no fitters around.
In the early years each Region dealt with their own staff training, and so a variety of different fault finding booklets were produced, essentially covering the same material. This page features some examples of those.
While the 33003 series of driving instructions contained some basic fault finding for each type, the issue of 33003/249 in April 1968 seemed to be the first standardisation of a region-wide fault booklet for Blue Square vehicles.
The standardisation continued with the reinvention of the drivers instruction booklets as the 33056 series, with BR 33056/13 being Drivers Fault Data.
The booklet was issued by the Staff Training School at Ilford in January 1966.
