18/08/60 - Ince Moss
Derailment involving Class 112
The 2.10pm Liverpool-Wigan, formed 51722 (leading) + 51691 and 51719 + 51701, was noted at St Helens to be missing the freewheel on 51691. The driver did not stop or isolate the final drive and continued to Wigan at reduced speed. After passing a 15mph speed restriction at Ince Moss the guard heard bumping noises underneath and applied the brake. The driver, unaware of any incident went to investigate. Oil was leaking the the engines on the rear three cars and the rear vehicle 51701 was completely derailed. A gearbox was found in the "4 foot" rearwards of the train and a freewheel lay nearby.
