December 1974 A dull mid-winter's day in South Yorkshire and a dmu for Hull enters Stainforth & Hatfield station from Doncaster to the south - note the steam-age red tail lamp - next stop Thorne North. The station and four track main line dates from the Great Central Railway's 1912 rebuild. The entrance was via the lane on the extreme right as it is today to the recently rebuilt station. That lane runs down from the Stainforth to Hatfield road just past the bridge from which the photo was taken in December 1974. Hatfield colliery's infrastructure looms over the scene and the railway & yards look like hives of activity.
