On a rather overcast May 31st 1980, Cravens Class 105 Motor Brake Second M50772 leads a service for Wigan Wallgate at Kirkby. Beyond the stop block on the other side of Glovers Brow bridge is 507025 awaiting the return journey to Liverpool Central. Kirkby had been a through station on the former L&Y main line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria, but when the line was electrified from Walton Junction in 1978, the station at Kirkby was altered in a similar fashion to the layout at Ormskirk. A single line split into two halves separated by stop blocks with the electrics and diesel services terminating in the same platform. In this view the trackbed and the disused platform of this former double track railway are clearly visible, complete with maroon & cream gas lamp post.
