A Class 101 DMU in blue & grey livery with headcode boxes, tail lamp and blue square coupling codes makes for an unusual sight, but set 803 consisting of cars W51450 W59546 W51522 was one of a number of longstanding Western Region 3-car formations allocated to Cross-Country services, so received this livery long before it became standard. The set number 803 carries the prefix P in this image, showing it was allocated to the Plymouth area at the time, but other prefixes were carried over the years as it was transferred between depots, the last being S (Swansea), and as S803, it and several other units were transferred to the north-east of England in Autumn 1987 when that region's new Class 143 Pacer fleet were experiencing chronic problems with their gearboxes. P803 is seen here departing Keyham, Devon on 06/09/1974.
