With the vintage Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway platform clock showing 3.08 pm, A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin set, with Driving Motor Brake Second M50765 at the rear, had just arrived at Blackburn with a service from Manchester Victoria via Bolton and Darwen on June 23rd 1979. The paraffin tail-lamp had not been removed from the rear of the set, ready for the return working back to Manchester. Such services normally terminated in the West facing bay at Blackburn, but on that particular day a four-car DMU set was stabled in the bay, necessitating the use of one of the through platforms for the turnaround.
