The fleet of 40 Class 100 2-car units were built by Gloucester RC&W Co in two batches for local services around Edinburgh (although eleven units were initially delivered to the Manchester area for a short period). Changing traffic patterns in the late 1960s saw them transferred to Norwich Thorpe depot for local services in East Anglia, where they remained until the end of the 1970s - regarded as non-standard, withdrawals started relatively early, though the final car lasted in passenger service until 1988. This tatty unit had evidently been transferred to Norwich by the time of this shot, which appears to be the early 1970s. The window bars suggest it has spent time in the North East, meaning this is probably 56099.
