By 1982, north-east local services were solidly in the hands of Class 101s allocated to either Heaton (Newcastle) or Darlington depots, the Class 104s and 105s having departed by 1981. The next DMUs to arrive were the new Class 143 Pacers from 1985. This pair of Class 101s seen passing at Battersby on Friday 20/05/1983 will most likely have been allocated to Darlington depot, which closed in 1984.
