On a chilly winters afternoon a Lincoln allocated 2-car class 114 Derby Heavyweight unit lead by vehicle E53021 calls at Rotherham Masborough station with the 16.05 Doncaster to Sheffield on 28 January 1984. Rotherham Masborough was built as a substantial four platform station serving two routes although by this date only those platforms on the former Midland mainline had a service, the far two here were on the route from Chesterfield via Barrow Hill and obsolete being on a freight only line. The station was poorly sited in the town so South Yorkshire PTE paid British Rail for Rotherham Central on the former GCR line to be reopened along with a short connecting line called the Holmes Chord. This spur allowed trains from the Sheffield line to reach the new station which opened on 11/5/87 and brought about the closure of Rotherham Masborough.
