Class 101 DMU cars E51205 + E54399 are seen at Gateshead East station with a South Shields-Newcastle service on Saturday 02/05/1981. Situated just on the south side of the River Tyne after leaving Newcastle, this station closed on 23/11/1981, replaced by the new Gateshead Interchange station on the Tyneside Metro system. Services on the South Shields branch ceased soon after in May 1982, for the same reason.
