Looking rather sorry for its self with the driving end sheeted over, Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53482 was awaiting its fate in one of the sidings at Dock Street, adjacent to the BR Preston Divisional office block (Ladywell House) on January 24th 1986. M53482 had been paired with car M53433, and on the 18th January 1986 the DMU was involved in a head-on collision at Preston, when on a returning football excursion from Carlisle to Accrington, the unit suffered brake failure and collided with Class 47 47111. No one was killed, but 44 passengers were injured. The car lanquished at Preston for some considerable time awaiting the outcome of the subsequent enquiry into the incident, and was later scrapped where it stood.
