Class 108 DMU at Birmingham New Street

Details

M51417 was a BR Derby works built Class 108, this unit, which is obviously brand new, went to Walsall (3C Rycroft depot) 20/02/1960, delivered with M56272. It was withdrawn from Longsight 09/06/1992 and scrapped at Gwent Demolition, Margam.

The picture was taken on the LNWR side of New Street, the Midland side still had the overall roof but this on side the roof was considered too badly damaged in the war and was demolished.

Just behind the unit is the connecting foot bridge which ran from the Stephenson Street, through the Queens Hotel building (right) over Queens Drive, which divided the Midland and LNWR sides, and exited onto Station Street. The bridge had been open when both sides had their roofs but clearly this side had to have roof and BR provided the minimum they could get away with, the rather nasty corrugated asbestos roof seen here.
